Habitat: On droughty upper beach of seepage lake. Sandy, somewhat peaty soil, in nearly full sun. With Pinus banksiana seedlings and saplings (to about 2 m tall), stunted, shrubby Salix petiolaris and Salix discolor, Spiraea tomentosa, Populus tremuloides seedlings, low, nonflowering Calamagrostis canadensis, Euthamia graminifolia and Lycopus uniflorus, in a carpet of Carex scoparia and Dichanthelium acuminatum. Common. Rays blue-violet. (OSH, UWSP, WIS)
