Robert W. Freckmann Herbarium

Asteraceae: Aster or Daisy

Leaves with no stipules. Flowers tiny in compact heads with 5 stamens united by their anther. The tiny flowers produce seeds dispersed by wind or bristles. The heads often appear as the "flower" when actually some have flat strap-like flowers (rays) as well as tiny tube-like flowers in the central disk as in Asters. Under each flower head is a clusters of small leaflets or bracts. Key to the Wisconsin Compositae- Dr. Robert Kowal
