Because of technology changes and personnel changes at UWSP and the Wisconsin State Herbarium, the database of plant species housed at this site was merged with the database from the OLD WisFlora website to create a new Flora of Wisconsin website at Currently we are encouraging all Wisplant viewers to begin using the Flora of Wisconsin website as soon as possible. Tragopogon: derived from two Greek words tragos meaning "goat" and pogon meaning "beard," suggested by its prominent, feathery hairs when in seed

Status: Introduced - escaped
Plant: erect, biennial, 1'-3' tall forb with milky juice
Flower: head 2"-4" wide with purple ray flowers, bracts slightly to much longer than the rays; inflorescence a single head on a long stalk; blooms April-Aug.
Fruit:dry seed on brownish, fluffy pappus
Leaf:alternate, grass-like with straight, pointed tips, clasping
Habitat: moist; disturbed sites, roadsides
