Because of technology changes and personnel changes at UWSP and the Wisconsin State Herbarium, the database of plant species housed at this site was merged with the database from the OLD WisFlora website to create a new Flora of Wisconsin website at Currently we are encouraging all Wisplant viewers to begin using the Flora of Wisconsin website as soon as possible. Status: Introduced - locally established; ecologically invasive
Plant: climbing, perennial, 3'-6' tall, herbaceous vine in dense, tangling, thickets; stems hairy; roots a dense, knobby mass
Flower: purple-black to dark red, 5-parted, 1/4" wide, the petals triangular, fleshy, with tiny hairs on the top; inflorescence with mostly 6-10 flowers in umbel-like, stalked, branched cluster (cyme); blooms May-Aug.
Fruit:long narrow, thin pods with many seeds on silky hairs
Leaf:2"-5" long, opposite, toothless, oval to heart-shaped with a pointed tip, dark green, smooth, shiny, short-stalked
Habitat: full to partial sun; uplands, disturbed sites, woods edge
Notes: to eradicate: remove and burn all pods; treat growing foliage with surfactant mixed with triclopyr or glyohosate; monitor in late fall
