Because of technology changes and personnel changes at UWSP and the Wisconsin State Herbarium, the database of plant species housed at this site was merged with the database from the OLD WisFlora website to create a new Flora of Wisconsin website at Currently we are encouraging all Wisplant viewers to begin using the Flora of Wisconsin website as soon as possible. Wisplants will remain operational through July 13th. After that date, all traffic to Wisplants will be redirected to the Flora of Wisconsin website.

Chamaedaphne: Greek chamai for "on the ground" and daphun for "laurel"
calyculata: calyx for "husk covering calyx;" ula for "little;" hence "with little calyx"

Status: Native
Plant: erect, perennial, 1'-3' tall shrub, branched, covered with tiny, brown scales, growing in dense thickets
Flower: white, 5-parted, 1/4" long, slender urn-shaped; solitary, nodding, stalked flowers arranged in a one-sided, spike-like cluster (raceme); blooms April-June
Fruit:flattened capsule
Leaf:stalked, alternate, evergreen, oblong, edges slightly curled downward
Habitat: wet; bogs; in acidic soil
