Plant: submerged annual/perennial, monoecious aquatic, sometimes partially buried; few, very thin rhizomes
Flower: paired, one of each sex
Fruit:flat, beaked, 1 edge wavy dry seeds in a cluster in the leaf axils
Leaf:thin, long, opposite or whorled at ends
Habitat: wet; shallows, to water 7' deep; in silty, muddy soil
