Plant: erect, perennial forb, basically stemless
Flower: violet, 5-parted, 3/4"-1 1/4" wide, petals often streaked with white, lower 3 petals bearded; solitary, basal, long-stalked and often taller than the leaves; blooms April-May
Fruit:oval to elliptical capsule with brown seeds
Leaf:usually variously lobed but usually not to the base (palm-like), sometimes only 3-lobed
Habitat: dry, well drained; woods, clearings, glades
