Rubus: Latin name for "bramble" or "blackberry"
wheeleri: for Charles Fay Wheeler 1842-1910 born in New York State; moved to Michigan where he co-authored a flora of that state. Later worked at Bureau of Plant Industry in Washington, D.C.
