Because of technology changes and personnel changes at UWSP and the Wisconsin State Herbarium, the database of plant species housed at this site was merged with the database from the OLD WisFlora website to create a new Flora of Wisconsin website at Currently we are encouraging all Wisplant viewers to begin using the Flora of Wisconsin website as soon as possible. Status: Special Concern
Plant: perennial, deciduous tree to 98' tall, on drier sites sometimes merely a large shrub; gray, thin, flaky to papery bark
Flower: brown to red-brown, roundish buds; flowers late winter into spring
Fruit:1-2 acorns with or without stalks, semi-circular or shallow cup covering 1/4-1/2 of the nut; light brown, oblong to oval nut
Leaf:usually obovate but sometimes lance-like to rounded lance-like in outline, leathery, base blunt to slightly pointed, edges ruffled, toothed to shallowly lobed; underside smooth or light green, upper side dark shiny green
Habitat: mixed woodlands and thickets, often on N-facing slopes; in limestone and calcareous soils
