Because of technology changes and personnel changes at UWSP and the Wisconsin State Herbarium, the database of plant species housed at this site was merged with the database from the OLD WisFlora website to create a new Flora of Wisconsin website at Currently we are encouraging all Wisplant viewers to begin using the Flora of Wisconsin website as soon as possible. Wisplants will remain operational through July 13th. After that date, all traffic to Wisplants will be redirected to the Flora of Wisconsin website.

Plant: perennial, deciduous tree to 98' tall; lower trunk without stubs of old branches, dark gray to dark brown bark irregularly cut with scaly ridges, inner bark orangish pink
Flower: dark reddish brown, terminal, conic to oval shaped buds; blooms in spring
Fruit:acorns biennial; turban-like to semi-circular cup covering 1/3-1/2 of the nut; oblong to roundish, smooth nut with 1 or more rings of pits around the tip
Leaf:elliptic, oval or obovate in outline, blunt to slightly pointed base, edges with lobes 1/2 way to midrib, tip pointed, upper side glossy light green
Habitat: dry; uplands, slopes, ridges; in usually well-drained poor soils
