Plant: perennial, submersed aquatic; from rhizomes
Flower: green-brown, small, stalk recurved from the upper leaf axils, winter buds hard with a fibrous base; inflorescence spike
Fruit:dry seed with low, sharp side and dorsal ridges
Leaf:alternate, entire, with prominent midvein; narrow usually with a bristly tip; stipules white and fibrous
