Plant: perennial, submersed aquatic; stems freely branching; slender rhizomes
Flower: green-brown, small; inflorescence spike
Fruit:dry seed with a flat, round, tiny beak, fruit spikes globular from submersed leaf axils; cylindrical from floating leaves
Leaf:alternate, entire, 1 prominent midvein, 2 faint side veins; elliptical-floating; submersed-long, fine; stipule fused to leaf .3-.5 of its length
Habitat: water < 7'; in soft sediment soil
