Potentilla: comes from the Latin diminutive of potens meaning "powerful" in reference to the medicinal properties of some species
arguta: Latin for "sharp" referring to sharp teeth on leaf margins

Status: Native
Plant: erect, perennial, 12"-40" tall forb, covered with fine brownish hairs, unbranched to the inflorescence
Flower: whitish to yellow, 5-parted, 1/2"-3/4" wide, petals slightly longer than the sepals; inflorescence a branched, tight cluster (cyme); blooms June-July
Fruit:dry seed
Leaf:pinnately-divided; basal leaves long-stalked and with 7-11 leaflets; upper leaves with usually only 5 leaflets
Habitat: dry to moderate moisture; woods, prairies
