Because of technology changes and personnel changes at UWSP and the Wisconsin State Herbarium, the database of plant species housed at this site was merged with the database from the OLD WisFlora website to create a new Flora of Wisconsin website at Currently we are encouraging all Wisplant viewers to begin using the Flora of Wisconsin website as soon as possible. Wisplants will remain operational through July 13th. After that date, all traffic to Wisplants will be redirected to the Flora of Wisconsin website.

Persicaria: peach-like, the medieval name for knotweed
sagittata: from the Latin for "arrow" and hence sagitate

Status: Native
Plant: climbing or tangling, annual, 3'- 6' tall, slender forb; 4 -angled stems very prickly
Flower: pink to white, 3/8" long, stalkless, petals and petal-like sepals; inflorescence short, rounded, uninterrupted clusters on long stalks both terminal and from the leaf axils; blooms Aug.-Oct.
Fruit:dry, 3-angled seed
Leaf:alternate, lance-like to elliptical, with narrow, downward-pointed lobes forming a heart-shaped base that surrounds the stem
Habitat: wet; marshes, swamps, streambanks
Notes: very similar to P. arifolia except for shape of leaf
