Phacelia: based on the Greek phakelos, meaning "cluster," and alluding to the densely crowded flower spikes of most species of the genus
purshii: after Frederická Traugott Pursh (1774-1820), a Saxon explorer, collector, horticulturist and author who received the plant collections from the Lewis and Clark expedition and first to published on them
