Because of technology changes and personnel changes at UWSP and the Wisconsin State Herbarium, the database of plant species housed at this site was merged with the database from the OLD WisFlora website to create a new Flora of Wisconsin website at Currently we are encouraging all Wisplant viewers to begin using the Flora of Wisconsin website as soon as possible. Wisplants will remain operational through July 13th. After that date, all traffic to Wisplants will be redirected to the Flora of Wisconsin website.

Arctic sweet-colt's-foot, northern sweet-colt's-foot
Petasites: from for "broad-brimmed hat" referring to large leaves and becoming Greek for "coltsfoot"

Status: Native
Plant: erect, perennial, 4"-20" tall, woolly forb; from clone-forming rhizomes
Flower: head 1/2" long with white to pinkish disk flowers; inflorescence with heads in an open, branched cluster; blooms April-June
Fruit:dry seed on fluffy pappus
Leaf:basal, up to 15" wide, 5-11 palmate lobes, rounded to kidney-shaped in outline, whitened beneath, on long stalks
Habitat: moderate moisture to wet; forests, meadows
