Plant: erect, fuzzy, perennial forb; taprooted
Flower: purple, 5-parted, 1/3"-1/2" long; inflorescence a 1/2"-1" dense, long-stalked spike of stalkless flowers lengthening when in fruit
Fruit:stalkless, thin, papery, beaked pod
Leaf:pinnately-divided into an odd number (15-31) of lance-shaped leaflets
Habitat: sandy lakeshores
