Plant: erect, perennial, 1'-3' tall forb
Flower: orange to red with purple dots, 6-parted, 2 1/2" wide, bases of spoon-shaped, petal-like, flaring tepals not touching near the center; inflorescence of 1-5 erect flowers in a cluster; blooms June-Aug.
Fruit:elongated, 3-parted capsule
Leaf:lance-like, on upper part of the stem in 4-7 whorls
Habitat: dry; woods, meadows, prairies, forests; in sandy soil
