Flower: lemma has stiff hairs, spikelets on branch ends and in upper leaf sheath
Fruit:thin spreading flat spiklets in 3-8 clusters
Leaf:narrow, rough cutting edges with stiff spines
Habitat: wet; marshes, wet meadows, shores, swales
