Plant: erect, emergent/submersed, perennial, semi-aquatic rush, both submersed & emergent forms; from rhizomes
Flower: 3/3-parted, some flowers replaced by awl-like bulblet; inflorescence clusters on 1 side of spreading branches
Fruit:brown capsule tapering to thin beak
Leaf:narrow, rounded with evenly spaced crossed sections; cupped around each other
Habitat: wet; shores, in shallow water; in sandy, boggy soil
