Plant: perennial, submersed aquatic; underground, thick, lobed stem with forked roots
Fruit:spore with sharp spines in brown spotted sac, spore sac in bowl-shaped base of leaves
Leaf:4 long air chambers, center vein, pale to medium green, soft, tapering to tip
Habitat: wet; lakes, ponds, soft water to > 7'; in sandy, sediment soil
