Plant: erect, perennial, 6"-40" tall forb, with many branches; stems 4-angled and mostly smooth except below the nodes; creeping rhizomes
Flower: white to creamy, 4-parted, 1/8"-1/4" wide; inflorescence a showy, branched, terminal cluster of many flowers; blooms June-July
Fruit:mostly smooth or with un-hooked hairs
Leaf:whorls of 4, linear to lance-like, tip slightly rounded
Habitat: dry, moderate moisture, to wet; woods, forests, prairies, meadows
