Dipsacus: from the Greek dipsa, "thirst," from the connate (joined or attached) leaf bases that in some ssp. hold water
fullonum: of fullers, a process of tightening a woolen weaving by rubbing the coarse, dry flower head on new fabric

Status: Introduced - naturalized; ecologically invasive
Plant: erect, biennial, 2'-7' tall forb; stems prickly
Flower: purple to white, 4-parted, with irregular petals; inflorescence a dense, cylindrical cluster on a long, naked stalk, some of the bracts taller than the flower cluster; blooms July-Sept.
Leaf:stem leaves lance-shaped, up to 12" long, toothless towards the top, bases surround the stem
Habitat: moist; roadside, disturbed areas
Notes: first year plant a basal rosette of wrinkled leaves
