Plant: erect, perennial, 8"-24" tall forb; single, slender stem, milky juice
Flower: greenish to pink, 5-parted, 1/3"-1/2" tall, the short, inwardly-curved horns shorter than the hoods; inflorescence a few-flowered, loose umbel (usually 1 terminal but occasionally with 1-2 from the sides); blooms June-July
Fruit:pods with many seeds on silky hairs
Leaf:lance-shaped to oblong, opposite, stalked, with fine hairs beneath
Habitat: dry; prairies; in rich, sandy soil
