Plant: perennial tree up to 135' tall but usually 20'-40' and 1'-2' in diameter, young twigs red; bark gray when young becoming rough and dark
Flower: blooms March-May much before the leaves open, in short clusters
Fruit:winged, paired fruit; fruit drawing, matures in spring
Leaf:opposite, undivided, 3-5 lobed; underside very pale, more or less hairy below when young, indentations (sinuses) between main lobes sharp; sharp, shallow lobes; base of end lobe wide; edges coarsely double-toothed
Habitat: swamps, moist uplands
