Violaceae: Violet

Leaves simple, alternate and with stipules. Flowers slightly irregular with 5 petals, the lowest often wider, heavily veined, and extending backward into a spur. The side petals often are bearded. The pistil has a thickened head and short beak. Flowers from axils are nodding, solitary. The fruit is an exploding capsule.
