Rhamnaceae: Buckthorn

Trees or shrubs with small regular flowers of 5 petals with stamens opposite petals and alternate to 5 sepals. Petals fold inward in the bud. Leaves mostly alternate but can appear opposite. Branches often with long alternate thorns. Fruit bitter and astringent. Pith of stems or roots sometimes reddish-yellow.
