Polypodiaceae: Polypody

Plants reproduce by spores (without embryo or true flower). Leaves (fronds) not closely overlapping; or if narrow and slightly overlapping, then has no axillary spore cases. Wall of spore case one layer of cells thick. Frond without spores pinnately compound, with spores very different. Spore cases on stalks which pass into a vertical jointed incomplete ring which breaks open the spore case as it straightens cross-wise.
