Plant: erect, perennial, 12"-40" tall forb; usually with creeping rhizomes
Flower: head 1/3"-3/4" wide, long stalked, with 13-30 pale purple to white rays; inflorescence large, open, many-branched clusters with oblong bracts
Leaf:mostly along the stem, linear to lance-like, stalkless, mostly entire, hairless below
Habitat: dry, moist; in sandy soil
