Plant: erect, perennial, 2'- 5 1/2' tall forb with milky juice; stems usually with rough hairs
Flower: head 1/2" wide, with cream ray flowers, bracts (phyllaries) densely hairy; inflorescence with mostly erect heads in dense, long, narrow clusters; blooms Aug.-Sept.
Fruit:dry seed with yellowish, fluffy pappus
Leaf:alternate, rough especially below, lower leaves tapering to the stalk and falling off early, upper mostly stalkless to clasping
Habitat: dry; prairies
