Plant: perennial tree to 55' tall, short trunks, open, rounded crowns; bark grayish brown to steel gray raggedly texture of narrow, vertical strips
Flower: male catkin 3/4"-2" long at the ends of the branches; blooms in late spring
Fruit:1 1/3"-2 1/2" long clusters, bracts 1/3" long
Leaf:narrowly oval or elliptic to oblong-lanceolate; edges sharply and unevenly doubly toothed
Habitat: moist; open to shaded hillsides, well-drained floodplains
