Helianthus: derived from two Greek words helios, "sun," and anthos, "flower," in reference to the sunflower's supposed tendency to always turn toward the sun
maximilianii: from Prinz Maximilian van Wied-Neu (1782-1867), who made extensive explorations in both North and South America and discovered this plant

Status: Introduced - naturalized
Plant: erect, perennial, 2'-10' tall forb often with several stems having fine, obvious white hairs especially toward the top
Flower: head 1 3/4"-4" wide, usually 10-25 yellow rays, disk yellow; inflorescence with several heads in tall, narrow clusters; blooms July-Oct.
Leaf:opposite along the lower stem, upper mainly alternate, rough on both sides, firm, base tapering to short winged stalk, edges usually not toothed leaf drawing
Habitat: prairies, disturbed areas; in sandy soil
