fullonum: of fullers, a process of tightening a woolen weaving by rubbing the coarse, dry flower head on new fabric

| Flower: | purple to white, 4-parted, with irregular petals; inflorescence a dense, cylindrical cluster on a long, naked stalk, some of the bracts taller than the flower cluster; blooms July-Sept. |
| Leaf: | stem leaves lance-shaped, up to 12" long, toothless towards the top, bases surround the stem |
| Habitat: | moist; roadside, disturbed areas |
| Notes: | first year plant a basal rosette of wrinkled leaves |
