Plant: erect, biennial, 15" -40" tall, mostly smooth forb with milky juice; leafy only on lower 1/3-2/3 of stem
Flower: head with 13-25 maroon or coppery rays; inflorescence with many heads in a large cluster (corymbiform); blooms June-Sept.
Leaf:either pinnately-divided or with broad, toothed lobes often more than 1/3" wide, not prickly
Habitat: dry; open woods, clearings
Notes: the variety name sanguinea is Latin for blood red- referring to the ray color
