Plant: erect, perennial, to 3' tall forb, unbranched below the inflorescence, mostly smooth
Flower: purple to white, 4-parted; inflorescence a long cluster of stalked flowers; blooms May-June
Fruit:pod, long, thin, widely spaced
Leaf:toothed; lower leaves usually pinnately-divided towards the base, the lobes often appearing to clasp the stem
Habitat: moist to wet; woods; in alluvial soil
