  • Taxonomy, anatomy, morphology, and evolution of tropical grasses, especially the woody bamboo genus Aulonemia of the American tropics; the basal grass tribe Phareae.
  • Grasses (Poaceae) of Madagascar.
  • Taxonomy, ecology, and conservation of plants of the western Great Lakes region.
  • Public outreach through the development of field guides and online information
