August 1, 2009. Meet at 10AM and park at the side of road
at junction of Doelle Rd and River Rd; see map as we have in the past. I was planning on ending at 2PM
again. I will bring some field
notebooks, map of the site, and plant lists from the past 2 visits.
Please bring a lunch and water
if you plan to eat. You might want to put your lunch in something you can
carry if we are going to the far side of the property.
I have 2 objectives for this
blitz since it may be the last one we do for this site.
1) The one area that we have not walked is out by the
Trempealeau River on the far East side of the property. This will be a good hike from the
road. Hopefully it will be
relatively dry like it was last year; however, last year we were there in
September. If we do get out
there, we will have walked quite a bit of the property during the 3 visits
to the site.
2) From our past 2 visits, we have found 14 species that
would be Buffalo County records if collected. Therefore, I think it is valuable to collect those 14
and any other species we find that also would be county records. Therefore, I plan to pack a plant press
and collect as the other members of our blitz team look for new spp. One of the scientific opportunities our botany blitz walks provide is the chance
to collect county record specimens to update species distribution maps.
These maps are located on the State and Freckmann Herbarium websites and
various publications for each species.
Hope to see you on Saturday,
July 11th for the Trempealeau blitz.
Thanks for your interest in this
site and blitz. – Tim Gerber
